Abstract

Making a community information guide using the iPad application “PeKay”: Dialogue for change with citizens

This project aims to create a community information guide in collaboration with citizens. Public libraries are required to offer community information, but most of the information that the libraries provide comes from government publications such as brochures and flyers. Citizens are considered information receivers only. However, the Internet and SNS have changed the format of community information as everyone can become a receiver and sender of the latest and most familiar information. Conversely, information on SNS is partially reliable because it is traced to word-of-mouth information. Therefore, it should be complemented by reliable information such as printed materials, which librarians use as reference tools. Our project, “Making an information booklet by PeKay” is connected with word-of-mouth information and library materials. The PeKay is an iPad application to create original storybooks. The books can be delivered by printed and digital media. Booklets are composed of original stories introducing community information and a book list. At the poster session, an overview of the workshop was presented using photographs and sentences. Actual printed booklets and some iPads were also displayed to operate. Community information at libraries can be enriched by dialogue with citizens. Information acquired from citizens can help further develop libraries and the community.
