Abstract

Empowering farmers’ community through digital media for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in India

Indian agricultural system is the largest national agricultural system in the world. The ICAR is the apex body for coordinating, guiding and managing research and education in agriculture sector in India. About 70% Indian population is dependent on Agriculture. Extension service is one of the most important activities in agriculture sector to transfer research and technology to Indian farmers. The paper highlights current status of rural and urban agriculture. The Indian agriculture extension system and its activities have also been discussed in detail. The authors also discussed the use of various digital media including social media, web-based services, app based services etc. Government of India’s digital India initiatives in the agriculture extension services for farmers have been discussed in the paper. The authors also discussed development of urban agriculture in India through digital media. Authors have also been advocating for empowering farmers community through digital media to achieve the SDGs in India.
