Abstract

Capturing learning interests with information literacy activities for a sustainable quality education

Keeping pace with knowledge and technological expertise, relevant for searching, retrieval, evaluating and effective dissemination of information in this information explosive world has been a major challenge in most developing world. Every academic library has the mandate to support its academic community in research and learning through relevant services to sustain a good standard of education. Information literacy that aids individual into making an informed decision, forms the basis of lifelong learning. It’s common to all discipline, learning environment, levels of education and recognizes disparities in learning styles. This can be achieved through different methods; Library tours, orientations, subject specific library courses among others. Recently, Anambra State College of Health Technology, Obosi Library engaged on an annual programme of one week consecutively, through creation of interesting Information Literacy activities in its academic community, Hash tagged- ⋕ASCOHTLibraryweek to attract students into developing the interest and joy for learning for a sustainable quality education. The programme objectives are to provide IL activities that can conform to the students’ learning style and capture their interest towards effective/efficient use of the library with activities like; lectures by Librarians on the theme of the week, wearing of branded T-shirts by lib. staff, IL training, guide and free access to the E-library resources, comedy and talk shows by first year students among others. This programme started in 2017 following none existence of any library instruction and has lasted till date. It had improved the library patronage, created awareness on the use of the college E-resources, fulfilling the SDGs of free access to information for all and improved the overall eagerness of the students in wanting to learn new things, thereby improving their academic performances and aiding a sustainable quality education. Implementation of IL in school curriculum, strategizing of flexible library services among others are therefore recommended.
