Abstract

When Earth Day Meets World Reading Day

On 2017 Earth Day (22 April), Science and Technology Theme Branch of Hangzhou Public Library jointly held READ FOR THE EARTH--2017 Public Welfare Event with Green Zhejiang (an non-government organization). From 12:00 noon on 22 April to 12:00 noon on 23 April, namely World Reading Day, Silent Spring has been read consistently for 24 hours. Over 3000 readers from Asia, Africa and America continents participated, including 3 NGO groups, 2 provincial government officers, 9 municipal environmental pioneers. The whole events were live broadcasted by NetEast (a Chinese famous website) Platform for 122000 readers and by Zhejiang TV station six times a day for local community. The promotion that reading of classic books combined with popularization of scientific knowledge, online participation connected with offline reading event, attracted tremendous attentions in the whole society, and was greatly supported by Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV, Film, Press and Publication and our readers. The event was rewarded as the First Prize in Creativity Execution and Planning Competition on Reading Promotion in Zhejiang Province, the Third Prize for the posters and entitled as Best Poster, Citizens’ Favorite Poster, which has become the only public library winning so many prizes.
