Abstract

Kids & Teens & Libraries – together on a cultural journey

In Estonia, 2017 was the nation-wide Children and Youth Year of Culture. Hundreds of events involving children and youngsters were organized in cooperation with libraries, museums, theatres and local communities. The events vouched for literature and culture in general. It was an exciting year for everybody, adults included. The poster presentation introduces two major significant nationwide projects: The Experience tour of the Children’s Republic (by The Estonian Children's Literature Centre) and The Libraries-Museums-The Youth (by Estonian Librarians' Association) The Children’s Republic adventure tour– From May to September, a custom-made truck for the Children’s Republic drove through Estonia and opened at different locations every day, stopping in towns and villages. At every stop a children's play was staged that told a story of Estonians and Estonia. In cooperation with libraries and museums a playground was created and in the craft workshops children could create objects and figure things out. Libraries-Museums-The Youth – the main idea was to invit libraries and museums to organize interesting events together for the young people, to involve them in cultural activities and in the process of creating culture. All of the nationwide events and workshops that took place were literary orientations and talks about heritage, Estonia has a long and firm tradition of ensuring that children, young people and their families have access to cultural experiences based on width and quality. Children and young people should have the opportunity to see and make use of high quality art and culture in their everyday lives, and on their own terms. The main role in this is played by the libraries network in Estonia. Supporting and encouraging the young both as creators as well as audience members helps ensure a continuous and abundant cultural life for the coming generations.
