Abstract

Library tour using virtual reality and augmented reality: The National Institute of Education Library experience

Virtual Reality (VR) provides a computer-generated 3D environment that surrounds a user and responds to that individual’s actions in a natural way, while Augmented Reality (AR) is the real-time use of information in the form of text, graphics, audio and other virtual enhancements integrated with real-world objects (Gartner, 2012). The combination of VR’s ‘simulation’ and AR’s ‘real world’ elements provide a holistic and immersive multimedia experience for the user. Leveraging on such technology, the National Institute of Education (NIE) Library in Singapore experimented with VR and AR to enhance users’ access of library spaces and collections. This allows our users to be able to interact with the library’s materials in both digital and physical spaces; we hope to engage users by putting a spin on the traditional library experience. This poster showcases the NIE Library’s experience in implementing AR technology on our pop-up book collection; this enables user access to a fragile restricted collection. We also used VR technology to feature a 360-degree view of the library, incorporating multimedia elements like photos, annotations, text and contextual floor plans (please see https://libris.nie.edu.sg/); this allows us to reach out to the unreachable and provide a more holistic user experience of our library. We demonstrated the project using tablets and shared observations, impacts, techniques, challenges, benefits, experiences and key learning points with conference attendees who were considering employing VR/AR solutions in their library. The jury on behalf of the IFLA Professional Committee selected this poster as runner-up during the Closing Session on Wednesday 29 August 2018 (please see https://www.ifla.org/node/67018).
