Chaeknarae service project – Free book delivery service for the disabled

The National Library for the Disabled (NLD) and the post office have been cooperating since 2011 to implement the project for the disabled. In cooperation with 811 libraries across the country, the National Library for the Disabled has been delivering requested books for disabled people who are not able to visit libraries by post, free of charge. The number of Participating libraries is 811(743 public libraries, 38 libraries for the disabled, 30 academic libraries). Service user is anyone who has disabilities, Received recognition of service to country, People with mobility impairments. Books provided are general books and materials for the disabled (braille books, audio books etc.), Non-books. The number of books one can borrow is 3~10 books at a time, Book lending period is up to 30 days at a time(These depend on library providing the service). Chaeknarae ensures disabled people’s access to knowledge information and helps them enjoy reading culture by providing convenience for the disabled to use libraries’ books, increases people’s interest in services for the disabled in libraries across the country and promote the services. Since 2011, 50,361 people used 390,800 books at 811 libraries (7 books per person). The NLD Operates and promotes Chaeknarae website, encourages application for Chaeknarae service, Provides 50 % of postal service fee (the post office covers 50%), and creates bags for delivering books and distribute them to participating libraries.
