Abstract

Books Build the Bridge of Friendship: Oregon-Fujian Library Exchange @ 20

Since 1996, the Horner Exchange Program has enabled thirty-nine librarians from the state of Oregon, USA, and Fujian Province, ROC, to visit each other’s libraries. In 2016, the 20th year of the program, at the Fujian Library Association Annual Conference, past participants from both countries met to reflect on how the exchange had changed libraries in both countries. One of only two such exchange programs administered by a state library association, the exchanges have been augmented by additional professional visits by Chinese library directors to Oregon in 2011 and attendance of Oregon librarians at the centennial celebration of the Fujian Provincial Library. In addition, two shipments of book donations to Fujian libraries have contributed valuable English language resources. Through photographs, maps, and captions, this poster will show how innovative ideas traveled across the Pacific have been shared with colleagues, including RFID technology, sorting machines, book displays, shifting focus from collection building to serving users, library instruction, preserving endangered cultural heritage, fingerprint technology, digitization techniques, data management, and the concept of open access. In addition to an overview of this valuable program, the poster will feature details of the 2016 exchange in both Oregon and Fujian.
