Abstract

Role of NGOs in library development in India

NGO organizations, corporate institutions, Trusts, Associations, Multinational Companies and Philanthropists can play vital role by funding especially through library as part of their social service i.e. by developing community library centers, land for the Library buildings, and furniture for the libraries etc. Public librarians need to tap such organizations to utilize this opportunity and provide the facilities and services to common peoples need. For the poster, researcher conducted thorough literature study regarding how in India NGO’s have helped in developing the public, private as well as school libraries. There are almost 48000 NGO’s registered in India out of that around 25000 NGO’s one of the cause is Education that includes library related activities. Presenter initially visited their websites where hardly few pieces of information were mentioned regarding work for the library development. So using newspaper articles, blog posts, journals, magazine articles and Google search engine, databases researcher found out almost 25+ NGO’s which actually work for the library development in various forms. By donating books, conducting book donation drive, book reading programs, book exchange program, donating mobiles book vans, various reading based activity programs, mobile crèche equipped with books, book trunks, paining libraries, library furniture, wall hanging book kits, librarian training programs etc. Hopefully the poster tried to depict the present scenario of NGO’s in connection with library and highlighted their work with pictures. The main image used for the poster was tree structure with roots where mentioned various sources of funds received by NGO, truck contains names of NGO’s, five branches presents the work area of NGO’s followed by pictures. It has tried to show the amount of work done and kind of plan can be developed about how NGO’s need to invest in libraries.
