Abstract

Overcoming boundaries of time and space in Zimbabwe: Using social media to network and empower Information Professionals

Social media has become a handy tool for Library and Information Science professionals the world over and Zimbabwe is no exception. ICT’s provide endless possibilities for Information Professionals to network , share information and organise themselves into a vibrant coherent whole. It has not been easy for the Information profession to emerge stronger after the socio economic challenges experienced during the first decade of the twenty-first .The presentation will highlight how ICT’s have helped to invigorate interest in the profession after years of stagnation , fragmentation and inactivity. It will explain how social media in the form of facebook, twitter, microblogging,blog comments and forums, and podcasts among others have helped in reviving the LIS profession thus enabling it to create networks and synergies with the global world. The presenter will use photographs, text and graphics to illustrate how ICT’s have become critical in enhancing Library professional associations in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe’s story relating to the development of the Library and Information Professional is inspiring considering the impact of socio-economic and political challenges that permeated every aspect of life especially during the first decade of twenty first milleneium.The presentation will also utilise interactive dialogue with participants. The presentation will highlight practical examples of how Zimbabwe library Association and its affiliate special interest groups are utilising such technology to organise and move the profession further towards a purposeful destination.
