Abstract

Photo Challenge@Library: READ

Photo Challenge@Library: READ was introduced in 1917 with the main objective of producing posters promoting reading habits among society. Since then, the program has received more than 200 posters depicting the act of reading with catchy captions promoting libraries, books and reading. With a different theme each year professional and amateur photographers took the opportunity to test their skills in shooting photos of models or talents reading in the library or any other places such as at the mobile library, cafe, office lounge or in the garden. The theme for 2017 is READ, followed by READ TOGETHER in 2018 and READ EVERYWHERE in 2019. Photographers will then use their innovation and creativity in producing reading posters with captions of their choice. As a result, the library received posters promoting reading of the highest quality and creativity in photography, art and design. It is exciting to see the subject portrayed in the posters were of locals with familiar settings, background and ethnicity. These posters were then printed according to specific sizes and distributed to 153 public libraries in the state of Perak. Besides that, posters were also presented to visitors and dignitaries as souvenirs. To date, the library has received some inquiries from the public to acquire some posters and process has begun in deciding the right pricing, delivery and other related matters. There were also plans to produce other products such as bus wraps, postcards, banners and buntings.
