Abstract

AfLIA Leadership Academy – AfLAc African Library Leaders promoting Change in the Community

This poster outlines the impact of the AfLIA Leadership Academy– (AfLAc) on Librarians and the communities they serve in Africa. AfLAc is a nine-month leadership training program designed for middle level Public Librarians in Africa. The program assists AfLIA to accomplish the goal of raising proactive leaders in Public Libraries. The first cohort had twelve participants and three Coaches from seven countries. The program aims to transform middle level Public Librarians into proactive and innovative Library Leaders well equipped to develop programs which focus on addressing challenges in their communities and turning libraries into Africa’s development hubs. The poster will show success stories. It will highlight that participants deliver services that impact communities through informal education of the girl child, skills acquisition for fish farmers, recycling of plastic waste into useful materials and reading clubs at the prison services. It will further demonstrate that through AfLAc, AfLIA is transforming communities in Africa through provision of innovative access to information. It will demonstrate alignment of the programs with the development agenda and how AfLAc is developing proactive public librarians to deliver programmes that answer directly to the Development Agenda. The poster will be printed including photographs of sites and leaders at work promoting change in their communities.
