This research begins from the recognition that Korea public libraries need renovations because of the aging process. As well known, library buildings become obsolete as time goes by and users' convenience becomes less. In addition, the library needs new functions due to social change, consequently the library needs to be renovated to meet new functions. With such problem recognition, this research examines the current status of public libraries in Korea and suggests direction of operation. Included in this poster are as follows: (1) identify the deterioration condition of public library in South Korea, especially their building and facilities. (2) analyze the priority of renovation of library buildings based on their characteristics, (3) establish a role commensurate with the size and status of each library, (4) finally, suggest the remodeling direction of operating system that reflects characteristics of Korean public library. The methods for data collection include a survey with 489 public library users and 50 non-users, focus interviews with 14 carefully selected librarians from experienced working-level librarians, and direct observations on the buildings and facilities in Korean public libraries.
