Abstract

You can read anywhere, even under water

The idea "You Can Read Anywhere, Even Under Water" was inspired from Let's read together for 10 Minutes programme. Every year on the 24th April all Malaysian from every walk of life will stop for 10 minutes to read to commemorate the World Book and Copyright Day. Taking cue from Article 14: Life Below Water of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) published by The United Nation development Programme (UNDP), Pahang State Library has taken the initiative to embark on its Let's Read for 5 minutes at the bottom of the Sea. It was held at the beautiful and enchanted Tioman Island on the 18th August 2016 as an innovative effort to educate the community that we can read anywhere regardless of time and location. Tioman Island is recognised as one of the most beautiful island in the world and a favorite tourist attraction spot for its blue ocean, white sandy beach and rich marine which made the island ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling. It is our responsibility to preserve, protect and continue to enhance marine life population so that the ocean become a sustainable source income for the people. This is line with the SDG's objective. With this in mind, Pahang State Library has taken the right step with the right direction by choosing Tioman Island as the prime location to educate the community to love sea and instill the interest for reading wherever we are. In order to commemorate this event, an artificial reefs with the sign "Do's and Don't at the Marine Park and Let's Read for 5 Minutes" at the bottom of the sea was erected on the floor of the South China Sea at Tioman Island. Therefore, with the inception of the Let's Read for 5 minutes at the bottom of the sea, Pahang State Library has successfully proved that reading could take place anytime, anywhere and anyhow.
