Abstract

Virtual journey through the world of books

One of the aims of Kaunas County Public Library (KCPL) is to create an opportunity for people to learn about the written cultural heritage. The library has more than 220 000 cultural heritage objects: incunables, palaeotypes, books from the press ban period. To protect cultural heritage, KCPL initiated projects which promote the interest of children and youth in the Old book by using attractive educational tools. “Reborn Authors of Childhood and Antique Illustrations” presents Lithuanian literature in interesting and playful way. Children will see what books were read by their grandparents, while older visitors will be able to revive their memories of childhood literature experience. In the virtual “Road of the book” space, children can become bookbinders or publishers: they will virtually write text, draw initials, decorate the book. KCPL is the first library in Lithuania, that created own mobile application. In this app you can find the virtual library tour, which inform you about events taking place in different areas of KCPL. You can also keep track of the library news and access video archives. While technologies are working their way into our lives, it is very important for libraries to create the ability for everyone to know the documentary heritage without leaving home. New KCPL products are building a bridge between the Old book and modern technologies.
