description: Access to information through libraries and information centres, among others, enhances the timeliness and quality of such information. In this study we sought to establish how information generated by both researchers and extension workers was being managed by the respective divisions for access and posterity. Data was collected through a questionnaire which was distributed to agricultural researchers and extension workers. The study found that there was limited access to libraries which confirms why the majority of extension workers consulted print sources and departmental collections first, as well as their preference for using publications in disseminating information to farmers. The respondents also utilised alternative sources of information, including circulars from the ministry’s head office, personal and departmental collections, media sources (newspapers, radio, audio materials), and other libraries. Libraries in NGOs, ICRISAT, FAO and Seed Co were also mentioned.
description: El acceso a la información a través de bibliotecas y centros de información, entre otros, mejora la actualización y la calidad de dicha información. En este estudio procuramos describir el manejo de la información generada por investigadores y personal de divulgación agrícola por parte de las respectivas divisiones para acceder a dicha información y utilizarla. Los datos fueron recopilados a través de un cuestionario que se distribuyó entre los investigadores en agricultura y el personal de divulgación agrícola. El estudio mostró que existe un acceso limitado a las bibliotecas, lo cual confirma el motivo por el cual la mayor parte del personal de divulgación agrícola consulta, en primer lugar, fuentes impresas y colecciones departamentales, así como su preferencia por el uso de publicaciones para difundir información entre los productores agrícolas. Los participantes también utilizan fuentes alternativas de información, como circulares de la oficina principal del ministerio, colecciones personales y departamentales, los medios de comunicación (periódicos, radio, material de audio) y otras bibliotecas. También se mencionaron bibliotecas pertenecientes a ONG, al Instituto Internacional de Investigación sobre Cultivos en los Trópicos Semi-áridos (ICRISAT, por sus siglas en inglés) y Seed Co.
