This shift has introduced a fundamental change in the information-seeking process. Discovery systems provide access to a large, diverse information landscape of scholarly materials—regardless of where the materials are located, what format they are in, and whether the library owns them or subscribes to them. At the same time, these systems typically offer simple, Google-like searching as the default option, to accommodate the expectations of today’s users. With this type of searching, users do not spend much time formulating queries, and their queries often yield large result sets; therefore, discovery systems focus on relevance ranking and on tools that help users easily navigate and refine result sets. Librarians have welcomed the advances in discovery services for their users. However, this new reality poses challenges to the practices that librarians have developed over the years and, in some cases, is at odds with the systematic, controlled approach to searching endorsed by librarians. Cette modification a introduit un changement fondamental au sein du procédé de découverte de l’information. Les systèmes de recherche procurent l’accès à un panorama large et diversifié d’informations de type scientifique – sans prendre en considération le lieu où sont localisés les documents, le format dans lequel ils sont distribués, ni même si les bibliothèques en détiennent les droits ou y sont abonnées. En même temps ces systèmes délivrent de manière caractéristique le type d’offre simple, l’option par défaut du type de la requête google, de manière à répondre aux attentes des utilisateurs d’aujourd’hui. Avec ce type de moteur de recherche les usagers ne perdent plus de temps à formuler des requêtes et leurs interrogations produisent souvent une gamme de résultats large ; en conséquent, les systèmes de recherche se concentrent sur la pertinence à l’affichage et les outils qui permettent aux utilisateurs de naviguer plus facilement et d’affiner leurs résultats. Les bibliothécaires se sont réjouis des progrès de la recherche dans les services offerts à leurs usagers. Cependant, cette réalité nouvelle impose des défis aux pratiques qu’ils ont développé avec les années et, dans certains cas, elle entre en conflit avec l’approche systémique et contrôlée de la recherche auxquelles les bibliothécaires souscrivent. Los sistemas de identificación brindan acceso a una amplia y diversa gama de información sobre materiales académicos independientemente de la ubicación de los materiales, el formato en que se encuentran, y si pertenecen al patrimonio de la biblioteca o son parte de una subscripción. Al mismo tiempo, estos sistemas normalmente ofrecen búsquedas simples, como la opción por defecto en Google, para ajustarse a las expectativas de los usuarios de hoy. Con este tipo de búsqueda, los usuarios no pasan mucho tiempo formulando preguntas, y las mismas normalmente generan extensos grupos de resultados; en consecuencia, los sistemas de identificación se centran en los rangos de relevancia y en las herramientas que ayudan a los usuarios a navegar con facilidad y a refinar los grupos de resultados.
