Abstract

Raise a reader, build a nation of reader: building solidarity among library societies

The reading culture is one of the valuable assets that boost human generative powers of thinking for new innovations and development of personal talents. Besides the prevalence of the importance of reading in order to expand the literacy related knowledge, we are looking deeper into developing human with spiritual values. This paper will discuss the efforts of Selangor State Library Corporation, Malaysia towards promoting and encouraging reading programmes for all kinds of readers. Contemporary examples of programmes successfully implemented in a unique way with active participation from stake holders are shared, such as gathering people to read in a large scale, creating the best collaboration in the state-level book fairs, outreaching the low-income communities with smart mobile libraries, and enhancing spiritual awareness among the Muslim society through Quran reading. Certain elements need to be in place in reaching our objectives, one that will require support from the leaders to acknowledge and take measurable actions to ensure fruitful planning and execution. This includes all librarians, school administrators, teachers, government agencies, parish and village councils, students, youth clubs, non-governmental organizations and individuals nationwide. This paper will conclude with recommendations and impacts of the programmes. As a conclusion, libraries help to raise a reader, create solidarity in societies, shape great character and develop human with values. To raise a reader (responsibility) Why : Reading for what :builds the enthusiasm and skills for lifelong learning, reading for pleasure.
