Abstract

The use of Web 2.0 applications for knowledge sharing among academic libraries in Uganda and Ghana

Academic libraries are facing tremendous changes which have been due to technological advancements. The paradigm shift such as the use of web 2.0 tools for interaction and collaboration; provision of mobile library services; library instructions among others. These services are introduced so as to improve and extend library services to meet user needs. In developed countries, the use of web 2.0 applications such as instant messaging, podcasts, wikis, RSS feeds etc in academic libraries are evident and these services have improved service delivery in various ways e.g. Improved communication between library users and librarians; facilitated information sharing etc. Although individually some librarians in Uganda and Ghana use web 2.0 and web 3.0 tools, a few have gone ahead to provide such services for knowledge sharing among librarians and library users. This paper, which is part of a larger study in the fulfillment of Masters in Information Technology, aims to demonstrate how a team of librarians are using web 2.0 and beyond tools to facilitate information and knowledge sharing. For purposes of this research libraries a team of librarians from 2 public universities and 2 private universities in Uganda and Ghana constituted the research sample. These libraries will demonstrate to us how they have used these tools, Demo will constitute the compilation of all the approaches from the different team librarians and tools used hence providing a practical approach to librarians how web 2.0 tools and beyond can be used to facilitate knowledge sharing.
